I Really Tried My Best

(Post 40 of 193. Thanks again to those who participated in the Fundrazr!)

I went out today for the first time in a week because I had to pay the rent. Even though my landlady and I bank at the same location, I haven’t figured out if there is a way do a transfer online between our accounts. It’s something I’ve sort of looked at over the years, but most months, I have to get most of the money from my Canadian account and don’t have the full 10,000 pesos in my Mexican account anyway. So physically going to the bank just seems easier. But that could change. Today, at least, the bank was operating as normal.

The plan was to walk to the bank, get a few things at Superama, and walk home, thus avoiding getting into a car with a stranger. Even though the temps were already infernal by 9AM, I set out anyway, using an umbrella as a parasol. Did my thing at the bank, crossed Montejo much too easily (no traffic!), and… lost the soles of my sandals. 😐

These sandals served me SO well in Oaxaca. They have died a Good Death. 🙂

No problem, I thought, I’m tough. It’s not a long walk. I can still do this.

Did my shopping, loading up my little cart, and… it fell apart. 😶

So I enjoyed a lovely chat with my Uber driver in his mercifully air-conditioned car. 🤷‍♀️

Mexico has now declared a state of emergency as we move into phase 3, so there are going to be increased restrictions on going out. Still curious as to whether my next dental appointment really is going to go forward. But so far, this party feels a lot more like a polite dinner party than the raves I’m seeing up north.

  1. Excuse me while I have a little giggle as I remember my shoes falling apart one Sunday at church. They were slides that I had not worn for awhile. I kept seeing these little bits of black stuff and by the time I got home the sole had split the whole way across the shoe. The shoe was in three pieces – one top and two pieces for the sole!
Question – can you write a check from your account and deposit it into your landlady’s account?

    • That’s funny!

I could physically do that, yes, but because oftentimes, my rent comes out of my Canadian account, I have physical cash on hand. Makes no sense to deposit it back into my local account. I already have next month’s rent in my Mexican account, so I’m going to call my bank and ask about some sort of e-transfer like we have in Canada.

  2. I’ve had this happen before, too!

How hot is it there right now?

I’m really enjoying your blog posts. I do have one complaint, though. There’s not enough Bonita. ;D

    • This is what happens when they stop sewing the soles of shoes to the uppers! ☹️

The weather has only been in the 80s/30s, but it is sooo muggy. 😅

I will make sure the next post has some Bonita. She says thank you. 🥰

      • You could probably find a cobbler there to sew them on!

Humidity, the bane of our existence. Bleh!

Thank YOU! (and give B some hugs from me, pls)

      • I have a cobbler I have referred to for more expensive footwear, but I’ve almost worn through the tops of these.

It was just as hot in Oaxaca, so I’m really appreciating the difference the humidity makes. 😐

        B sends kisses!

  3. We use Banamex, as does our landlady. Very easy to transfer from our account to hers (and to pay CFE, Telcel, etc.) and no fee to pay her. As for transferring money from Canada, we use TransferWise. The first time is slow, but subsequent transfers arrive in 2-3 business days. Good exchange rate, low fees, and Banamex doesn’t charge anything on the receipt. Buen suerte!

    • I am with HSBC. It’s the only bank that would let me open an account, and my landlord had to cosign for me! I can do everything online, like pay all my bills, but I haven’t figured out how to transfer her money. CIBC in Canada now lets me do a direct transfer directly into my Mexican bank account, so I tend to do that. If I am desperate for cash and don’t want to wait for the account to account transfer, then I will do an Etransfer to Scotiabank and withdraw at SB here for free. But I am getting a lot better at managing my payments from clients so that I can send only what I need to Canada and the rest here so I don’t have to move money as much between the two countries.
