Driving northbound into Dawson City, just after the bridge, you will see on your right a sign indicating a photo op on Dome Road. Make sure to turn! The road will take you up to the highest point in Dawson, the Midnight Dome, where solstice festivities take place every year. It’s a long climb (so I suggest driving 😀 ) that is well worth it. Do pull out along the way to take in the views partway up the hill!

Canada Post Surprises Me Pleasantly, For Once!
Yesterday, I emailed my UPS store guy and asked him to send me my mail general delivery to Dawson City. He sent me a tracking number this morning that told me that he had the package out within an hour of my having SENT the email. Again, amazing service on that end!
I just checked the tracking number again and my package is in Whitehorse, less than 24 hours later!
I’m not sure if he sent it Priority or Xpress Post, but for either service, this is astonishing!
Wildfire Causes Shutdown of the Alaska Highway
The Alaska Highway is closed indefinitely between Fort Nelson, BC, and Watson Lake, YT, due to a major wildfire that has been ongoing for about four days.
No detour has been suggested, but I think the obvious solution is to take the Cassiar Highway from Prince George, which, I’m told, can be a bit ‘rough’ in spots, but which will take you to twenty minutes north of Watson Lake.
The Sourtoe Cocktail Club
My evening went something like this:
It was a bit cooler after 8 so I decided to take the bike out and maybe even go into town to see how easy it is to get into town by bike.
I met a very nice lawyer from California who is motorbiking around the north and staying in a tent set up next to my car. Talk lead to more talk and an invitation to join him and another gentleman at the Downtown Hotel for a special Dawson City drink around nine.
Which is how I found myself kissing a mummified human toe floating in Yukon Jack whiskey and becoming an official inductee of the Sourtoe Cocktail Club. I’m proud to say I went first!
The pictures in this gallery are not for the faint of heart. Bwa ha ha.
(And, yes, I am reasonably confident in saying that it IS a human toe and not a prank pulled by locals on tourists.)
More about the Klondike River Campground
I got home from Dawson for good at about 3 as heat stroke was setting in. 🙂 I realised that for all my puttering around on Tuesday, I hadn’t taken any proper pictures of the area, so I did so then.
It was too hot to cook indoors, so I baked a potato (cooked with an onion for maximum flavour) in a fire and roasted veggie hot dogs over it. Yuuuuuuuuummy. 🙂
After dinner, I went in search of the hiking trail that’s supposed to start in the the campground and lead to the Klondike River. Unfortunately, the bridge over the overflow creek halfway done washed out, so I was unable to get to the river. I did get across the creek, but was unable to pick up the trail again, darn it!

you can see the two pull-thrus immediately to the right of the first fork into the campground itself (just above the blue line showing Ross Creek)
I enjoyed the quiet time at the campground, but was glad to go just because of the MOSQUITOES!!!
