  1. I’ve had these for 20 years and my mother had them for at least five years before that. The finish is dingy.

    Should I:

    1) just clean them up and maybe apply fresh varnish and/or wax?

    2) paint them the same bright pink as my chair?

    3) paint them the same bright turquoise as my kitchen cart?

    4) paint some parts pink and some parts turquoise?

    5) do something else amazing I didn’t think of?

  2. 4) paint some parts pink and some parts turquoise? AND add a 3rd color – not in equal parts – maybe 2 drawer fronts (one big and one small). Think whimsy, think POP. ; )

    • I like how you think! I have been sort of thinking of getting some orange and could maybe do the case in orange and the drawers in the pink and turquoise, but I didn’t want to have to go buy more paint for this project (trying to use up what I have). Hmm…

    • No white! OMG, are you mad, woman?! Do you not remember who you’re speaking to?! πŸ˜‰

There is WAY too much white/beige/grey/brown in this house as it is (which I know would delight you!). I sure ain’t adding to it. πŸ™‚

      • OMG I totally agree with you Rae NO white!!

I’d go with something similar to Dean’s comment and add your idea too!! The more color the better I say! You ARE in MΓ©xico after all, which totally means a lot of color to me!!! :o)

I do NOT like to paint, but if I lived close to you, I would come and help you paint, because I love your color schemes!!

        • Ah, Cat, you are a person after my own heart. LOL

I’m trying to avoid the mistake I made in Miranda of having only three colours (although in a house that size, maybe that made sense), but I’m definitely quickly veering into pink/purple/turquoise territory here! Ideally, I’d need some orange, but I’m trying to use up the paint I have. Dilemmas, dilemmas…

  3. I would go for number 1). I’m not sure the bureau is solid wood or veneer; however, from the picture it looks as though the chest has a nice wood grain, and the treatment you suggested would bring out the beautiful wood grain. I recommend this because the wood grain would bring some natural contrast to a background of lots of color which you have already chosen.

    • Dee, I’d normally be inclined to agree, but since this is just a cheap mass marketed IKEA product, I’m not that married to the idea of keeping the wood look. There’s also nowhere near enough colour in the house and way too much white/beige/brown/grey! πŸ™‚

  4. I would be inclined to leave it ‘as is’ because it is a beautifully put together piece. How about something that honors the beauty of the original wood with some highlights or accents of color? Maybe the case the drawers set in, in the original finish and the drawer fronts painted? How artistic are you? Original wood as the background and then paint motifs over it.

Whatever you do, it will be interesting to see where you go with this piece.

    • I should have posted the origin of the piece — it’s just cheap mass marketed IKEA. So I don’t have that much respect for the wood or the “craftsmanship.” I also considered half painted, half natural wood. Hmm… Thanks for chiming in!

        • It’s almost 25 years old at this point and hasn’t been touched since the initial coat of stain. I think it needs to be made pretty. πŸ˜€

  5. Hi rae,
I think paint the top and sides a nice light blue, and the drawers in different colours: yellow, red, orange, brown, green.

  6. Just saw this post! I like the idea of multiple colors but would like to see a variety of shades of perhaps two or three at the most colors.

Did that fit in the back of the truck? Can’t believe you brought it down with you.

    • It’ll definitely have two colours!

It’s tiny! It’s the small wooden case I had on my counter in Miranda to hold my utensils. 18.5β€³ x 12.5β€³ x 7β€³
