So, the goal was to be able to read a sushi menu. I spent some time on google.jp and found a very short one. I could not only read it, I knew what 7 of the 10 items were. So, 100% reading ability, 70% comprehension. Not bad for barely more than a month of study! Without knowing any katakana or kanji, already know I definitely wouldn’t starve in Japan. 😀

Great Work!
I had very little problem with getting food while in Japan. Many of the restaurants had pictures on their menu which helped a lot. I also frequented the ‘deli’ at the trail station which allowed me to see what I wanted and then point. Bought mostly fresh items at the ‘supermarket’ where again I could see what it was that I was getting, although didn’t always know what it was.
Thanks, Ed!
Not starving in Japan was more of a tongue in cheek way of saying “My Japanese language consists of a bunch of food most westerners wouldn’t even consider food.” 😀
Today, I pretty much mastered the rest of the Hiragana that builds on the basic 46. My workbook now has me working on writing sentences! Never mind your vocabulary, start writing! Scary! 😀
