Tight Connection

Whew! I made it to Vancouver! There was only forty-five minutes between my inbound Montreal flight and my outbound Vancouver flight at Toronto… and we ended up circling the airport for nearly a half hour! I had only enough time to bolt to my gate and grab a quick bathroom break while the priority customers boarded. I have some checked luggage for this return trip and I will be very surprised if it is waiting for me in Penticton.

Security screening in Montreal was a piece of cake. I didn’t have to take off my shoes and I didn’t even beep when I went through the metal detector so I was saved an invasive groping by the staff. I paid for that dearly on the flight to Vancouver, however, since, despite my checking several times that I would have a window seat, I was seated in a middle one! YUCK! At least, we were in the emergency row, so the leg room was luxurious. My neighbour to the left was very cold and sighed each time I moved around well within my designated buffer zone. The neighbour to the right, however, was quite friendly (and generous with his cashews) and we shared a few laughs as my, thankfully empty, beverage glass kept on leaping off my tray! I was glad I’d brought a snack of dried fruit flat bread, cheese, and clementines since the options for food in Montreal were dismal and I didn’t have time to grab anything in Toronto.

YVR has a burger jointed called Vera’s where I caught a very late dinner. I’d been looking forward to udon at one of the Japanese kiosks, but that restaurant was clear across the airport. The veggie burger piled high with fresh veggies and the fresh-cut fries we’re a very yummy, and inexpensive, surprise, though, so I’m not disappointed.

I only have about a half hour left in Vancouver before we start boarding for Penticton. If everything goes well, I’ll be there in two hours and home in three. I miss my cats and my bed!

The Final Assault

Yesterday, I went to Penticton to pick up the one thing I was missing to finalize the library’s footprint. It was another case of being at exactly at the right place at the right time. I don’t want to say what it is because picture will make a bigger impact once I get the thing in here!

Today’s goal is to get the study emptied, prepped, and primed.  It’s going to be a huge job; I have to remove the valances and ugly light fixtures and find space for everything I’m moving out of here. But once that’s done, the rest of the work will come together. I’d like to get a first coat of paint on first thing tomorrow so that I can then work on the curtains. The toilet room only needed one coat of paint, so I’m hoping it will be the same with the study.

Then, I’ll get the rig prepped for my departure to make it easier for my cat sitter to do her tasks. When I come back from Montreal I will do the loft, then the kitchen. It’s funny how my original plan had me going the opposite way–kitchen, loft, study, but this new addition to the study makes it necessary to reverse the plan.

Here’s a quick before shot of a study valance, which will be undergoing a makeover instead of a removal for reasons that will soon be explained:

yuck

And here is one of the roller shades that is now in the dumpster. I have had to live with this monstrosity, tear and all, for two years:

ew

Getting this room DONE is going to be so awesome!

Simple Solutions

One of the reasons I was procrastinating on the library trim is that I did not have the strength to deal with the corner that was damaged in the great leak of ’10.

I figured I’d have to remove the whole piece of paneling from that wall and then put new trim. Today, I decided that enough was enough and admitted to myself that I have no intention of rebuilding that whole wall. I looked at my scraps and found a solution. Not an ideal one, of course, but that corner is going to be hidden by my lounge chair, so it just needs to look polished.

The biggest challenge is that there are two exterior screws sticking out of the wall. The builders simply put a thicker piece of trim there and then screwed into that trim from the outside, then sealed the screws.

I decided to imitate that with what I had on hand by making holes into the back of a thick piece of wood so that I could get it to lie flush against the wall.

Thing is, the wall isn’t exactly plumb and square and I couldn’t get the board to fit perfectly. So, I had to pad it at the top with a bit of door trim. I faced the whole thing with shoe moulding and ta-dah:

While I was down there, I put in a threshold between the library flooring and the cab carpet:

As a side note, I keep moving the litter box around, but I think it’s going to live in the cab when I’m stopped.

Domestic Bliss

It’s amazing how long the days are when you don’t have to waste time at a job. Even after I’ve done as many billable hours as I can, worked some leads, and caught up on my bookkeeping, there’s still time to clean the rig, take walks, go swimming, and be silly with the cats. At the rate I’m going, I might actually finish the toilet room and get the dressing room done! I also have a library project I’m itching to get to, in addition to desperately needing new window coverings for the study.

The weather today wasn’t as nice as the last few; very windy and overcast, and it only went into the high teens (*cough, cough*), but still nice enough to throw open windows and roof hatches. I even had the front door open all day, something I didn’t do once this summer, and which delighted Neelix who loves to lie on the landing and stare through the screen door.

I just love being home; there’s no better place to be!

Slowing Down

It was a slow, easy drive to Liard Hot Springs last night. I decided to be a tad cheeky, what with a full hookup park next door and dry camping spots available for the exorbitant cost of $21 at the provincial park, and just spend the night in the parking lot across from the park entrance.

Beta Pool was closed because of bear activity, so I had to hang out with a million other people in alpha pool. It wasn’t the most relaxing hot spring experience of my life, so I didn’t soak for long.

It was nice to get back to the rig, shower, and then hunker down for the night. I made a nice dinner, watched a movie, and read.

This morning, nothing short of a natural disaster could have gotten me moving at a speed faster than a crawl. It was the first time in months that I was able to just lie in bed with the cats, read, and know that I had nothing and no one waiting for me. I lingered over coffee and breakfast, then set off around 10:30.

The drive from Liard to Fort Nelson is very technical; lots of tight turns and 7 to 8% grades. It was my first time doing it in that direction and I had a lot of fun. I saw more buffalo and caribou today than in all the sightings I’ve had in my life combined.

I’m going to get some work done, gas up, then head to a turnout I stayed at in the spring of ’09. Tomorrow, I’ll move on to Fort St John or Dawson Creek and then the adventure will begin!
