170 Megabytes

Today is the start of a new billing cycle with Telus and it’s going to take some adjustment. I only have 5GB available to me, or 170MB per day. It was easy to live on so little bandwidth back in Dawson since the connection was slooow up there. But here, in southern Alberta, I can stream and download as though I was on a hard wired connection. I had no problem using up 5GB in the week I’ve been here!

To put that 170MB into perspective, I’ve been online for a half hour and have only been surfing and doing email, I haven’t streamed or downloaded anything. I’ve already used up a third of today’s allowance.

My 5GB costs, with tax, $72 a month, so that’s $14.40 per GB. You’d think it’d be possible to just pay piece meal for additional data, right? Ha! Each additional MB over my allowance is 5 cents. There are 1024 MB in a GB. So each extra GB costs $51 (plus taxes and fees)!

I think it’s ridiculous that there is such a thing as unlimited talk and text, but you are only allowed 5GB for surfing.

A Blustery Drive

From Missoula, I could take I-90 to I-15, but that would have been the long way as I-90 dips down to Butte to reach I-15. I decided to take a chance on Montanta highway 200 eastbound which would take me straight across the state to join I-15 twenty kilometres north of the Flying J/Pilot truck stop. That would mean having to come back up the same twenty kilometres, but that extra forty was still less than doing the all interstate route.

The first half or so of highway 200 made me regret my decision. It is a very twisty single lane route through a valley rimmed with snow powdered black mountains. The speed limit is ridiculous, 65-75, and there are very few places to pull over and let people pass. Add to that the pouring rain and I repeatedly berated myself for choosing the scenic route over the easy one.

But then there was the climb to the summit of the Rogers Pass, not to be confused with the Canadian pass of the same name. From the top, there is a long 6% descent with one hairpin turn (yours truly didn’t even break a sweat). When you get to the bottom and are able to take a breather, you are in a completely different world of yellow hills and big open sky. Finally, I could understand how Montana got its nickname! And the weather cleared to give me that blue I’ve only seen on the prairies, that bright blue that washes out at the edges because there isn’t enough pigment for all the sky. Oh, I was so glad to have taken this route!

It was a torturous ride through this great scenery to the truck stop outside Great Falls because of the very high winds that kept blowing Miranda towards the ditch. I am convinced that had I been passed with a big rig I would have not had the strength to keep Miranda on the highway. And it just got worse on I-15, that highway I only knew until today as a desolate desert path leading to a glittering oasis of hedonism.

The truck stop is going to be okay for the night; there’s lots of room to spread out, but the wind is very bad! I am keeping a very close eye on the kayak on the roof of the car; I may have to take it down.

There’s public wifi here with short-term packages, including $4.79 for 24 hours. Slow, but the price is right.

I've never been so grateful to a turnout before so I could take pictures!

Now, with all my apologies to Paul Brandt, I need to burst into song:

The sign said (100) miles to Canada
and my (rig) tore across Montana
Ian Tyson sang a lonesome lullaby
And so I cranked up the (iPod)
Cause there’s just a little more to go
Before I cross the border at that Sweet Grass sign

The Most Random Wifi Signal Ever

I accidentally left Airport on when I got home from McDonald’s earlier and discovered that if I place my computer just so over the filing cabinet I have a pretty decent wifi signal! Tomorrow, I’ll try to find the source of the signal (it’s some sort of admin building) and get closer to it. If that works, I’ll be staying here all day to finish my taxes and send some more job applications.

Wifi on my new computer has been an absolute nightmare. Apple, who pioneered wifi technology, had the not-so-bright idea of encasing an antenna in aluminum!  I went to the Mac troubleshooting forums and discovered that I need two pieces of equipment to improve performance: an external antenna and an amplifier. Since I’ll be going back to cellular internet very soon and plan to get a similar setup for my next US adventure, I won’t be investing in wifi anytime soon.

I still think (know) that Macs are infinitely superior to PCs, but they are not infallible!

Fun and Sun on the Oregon Coast

Unfortunately, there isn’t a single viable public wifi signal in all of Florence, so I am still unable to share the story of the two remarkable days I’ve had along the Oregon coast, much less the last photos I took in Eugene. It just wouldn’t be fair to the tales to tell them without pictures.

I have been blessed with perfect weather, good company, and adventures straight off my bucket list. I cannot wait to share it all. The posts have been written so that the details do not fade from my mind and I will get everything up as soon as I can!

Today is a maintenance day. I’ll shortly be pulling out of the casino with just Miranda to have her oil changed and perhaps to use a dump station. I’ll hook up when I pull back in, then spend a final night at the casino. Tomorrow, it’ll be time to start the journey back to Canada where potential employers are eagerly awaiting my arrival so we can start to schedule interviews!

Seriously Missing My Internet Connection

I have over 100 pictures to share of my adventures yesterday, but this Safeway/Starbucks connection isn’t allowing me to do much. The story is worthless without the images, so I’m not even going to offer a teaser.

Not having my own internet connection is starting to cramp my style. I’ll be back in Canada within the next two weeks and I will have a few days left on my current billing month, so I plan to surf, surf, surf!
